This is a good time to prune fruit trees – apples, pears, plums, cherries and small fruits: specifically raspberries and blueberries. If you have flowering trees you want to prune, just be mindful if they are early bloomers, you will remove some flower buds, and may want to wait until right after the bloom cycle. Check out your landscape plants for broken branches and make a proper pruning cut just below the damage. Mother Nature was far kinder this year than the last 2 winters, so far.
If you have any question whether there is disease present, wiping your pruners or saw with alcohol or a bleach stick between cuts is a good idea.
Now is also a good time to cut back ornamental grasses. Grasses can be very sharp, so use gloves! Tie up your grasses first and with sharp pruners cutting the grasses about 6 inches above the ground.
