We are happy to be receiving more rain these days. But along with rain, and those humid systems blowing in from the south, we are seeing more plant damage from slugs. It is also the season for leaf miners (those bugs which will skelontonize your chard and beet leaves); cabbage worms, codling moth worms and other caterpillars; colorado potato and other leaf-eating beetles.
Protecting your garden fruits, vegetables and ornamentals from pests is always a battle. Just a few decades ago it was acceptable to put Seven insecticide on everything. We know know that what we put on our plants goes into our ecosystem and, with edibles, into our bodies. At Rolling Green Nursery we recommend Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew for controlling these types of pests. Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew contains Spinosad which is a biological control and approved for organic gardening. It can be applied in the evening, after the bees have gone back to their nests for the night, and regular weekly to bi-weekly applications can help control the damage done to your plants.
