Heidi C. has represented our Annuals and Houseplants teams here at Rolling Green Nursery for many years, and knows a great plant when she sees one. We asked her what her top three favorite houseplants for winter are, and here were her picks.
1. Anthurium
“I love these classically beautiful plants because of their bright colors and continuous blooms — that’s a real win in in winter. They are low maintenance and forgiving of overwatering too, so it’s easy to grow and enjoy them. Whether you want solid or variegated bright reds, pinks, purples, yellow or green shades, you can find a variety that will dress up your rooms. We have these large, showy red or coral ones right now, as well as the smaller purple variety, which has been very popular. Anthurium are also great in dish gardens, and pair easily with other plants.”
2. Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum)
“These trendy and unusual plants offer their own special appeal. I love the papery basal root, and the architectural, textured foliage. They look almost like a sculpture. They’re very low maintenance and versatile. Of all the ferns, they consume the least water, and require virtually no pruning. They can be extremely long lived and get better and better with age, amassing into this great textured tapestry of basal roots and foliage. You can also have a lot of fun by choosing different containers for them. They can be placed higher up in stylish Vanda baskets
with moss, hung on an eye-level wooden wall mount, or grown in a traditional pot.”
3. Song of India (Dracaena reflexa “Variegata”)
“I love these primarily because of their bright color — that lemony yellow is so cheery and energetic in winter when you want to combat the grey weather and shorter days. Their foliage looks like beautifully painted ribbons, and they have a branched growth, so they bush out into a nice shape. They’re undemanding and easy to grow, and will slowly reach several feet tall, becoming a nice floor plant. They don’t need much, but give back so much.”
