Mulching your vegetable garden helps maintain soil moisture and reduces evaporation. It also blocks weed seeds from seeing the sunlight & sprouting, which means a whole lot less work for you. Want to know just how much work? *Most weed species are prolific manufacturers, a single weed can produce over one million seeds! Crazy huh? Also, some seeds can remain viable in your soil for over 40 years! It is only fair to note that seed survival in most species declines rapidly within the first few years, with only a small percentage of seed surviving for extended periods, Burnside et al (1986). You will do well to remember this little verse “One year’s seed is seven years’ weed.” To save you from misery, we sell locally harvested salt march hay and bagged, heat treated, weed free, chopped straw from Lucerne Farms. Products are subject to availability. A customer has graciously shared a picture of her vegetable garden. Notice how few weeds she has to contend with because she mulched.

/ 27 Apr 2020Hi Lynn. We are unfortunately sold our of salt marsh hay right now. It is possible to have it in the spring, but I do not know of any local source for it right now, I’m sorry. But – Lucerne Hay may be a good substitute, and we do have that in stock.
